We have found that sowing coriander seeds three or four times between March and August ensures a continuous supply of fresh coriander leaf during the summer and autumn. Contrary to popular belief, watering the plants well can actually increase leaf production and prevent bolting, despite coriander originating from drier climates in southern Europe, north Africa, and southwestern Asia. When the plants begin to flower, we allow the seeds to develop and ripen, and then gather them for our own coriander seed. Coriander, also known as cilantro, is a unique and flavorful herb that belongs to the Apiaceae/Umbelliferae family, which includes anise, caraway, cumin, dill, and fennel. These plants can grow up to 60 cm tall, and the leaves start out lobed and become more feathery as the stem grows taller. We recommend Caribe, previously known as Filtro, for its exceptional leaf production. Interestingly, research has shown that one's preference for the taste of coriander leaves is genetically determined.

Coriander does not suffer from any particular pests or diseases.

Sow a pinch of seed in pots or modules undercover from March until September. Transplant module grown plants into 8 cm pots. Water as necessary to keep them from drying out. Succession sow to have a constant supply. You can grow coriander outside. Sow seed 1 cm deep in drills in well prepared ground from May.

Pick the leaves when the plants are large enough as required. Use fresh, coriander does not freeze or dry well. Pick off the flower heads to encourage leaf production but in the end let some plants go to seed and harvest them in August and September when dry. Use Coriander leaf in curries and chopped as an extra garnish. Make your own green Thai curry paste or add it to salsa and guacamole. Use dry seeds whole or grind them to make your own coriander powder.
