Hydroponics, at its most basic level, is a method of growing whereby the plants roots are directly exposed to water based, nutrient rich, solutions without using, or needing, a soil or coco medium.
When plants are grown in soil or coco, it acts as a kind of reservoir for the nutrients, the plants then uptake these nutrients (food) as and when required, meaning soil isn’t essential to growing healthy plants, its simply used to store food along with supporting the plant.
When growing in hydroponics, this allows the plants root zone to be exposed directly to the nutrient rich solution, this can be permanently or at desired intervals. The roots of the plant can also be placed straight into the hydroponic system using net pots, but can also use an inert medium such as clay pebbles or rockwool as these don’t retain the nutrient solution, meaning it will continue to circulate throughout the root zone but also helps support the plant.
Growers should also be aware that great care should be taken making sure the EC (nutrient strength) and pH (acidity or alkalinity of a solution) is correct, too high or low, the plants could run into problems, for example nutrient burn or starvation, but regular testing of these levels will ensure your plants thrive.
Although growing in a soil medium is more straight forward, when growing hydroponically, as the root zone is directly exposed to the nutrient rich solution, the plants growth and yield is greatly increased, with some growers claiming a three to four fold increase on the final yield, making the extra work certainly worth the effort.
There are also different ways to grow in hydroponics, these include:
- Nutrient Film Technique (NFT)
- Flood & Drain
- Deep Water Culture (DWC)
- Recirculating Deep Water Culture (RDWC)
- Drip Irrigation Systems
And there is also a whole range of dedicated base nutrients, growth stimulants and bloom boosters available, these have been specifically developed to be used in hydroponic grow systems, in order to help you, the grower, get the most out of your favourite plants.
