Watermelon Plants Are Go In Burnley – Week #1 & Seeds Germinated
As one grow ends, another begins! As our chilli plants have had their first harvest, it's time to try growing something a little different this time, so Michael & his team in Burnley are having a go at watermelons from seed.
To get things started, the seeds were put into Root Riot Cubes, that had been soaking in tepid water, then placed into a 22cm propagator, with a thermostat controller set to 23°C, and under a Hydro 22 T5 Propagation light. A small ROOT!T heat mat was also used to help to keep the base of the propagator warm.
Four days after planting, all 4 seeds had cracked, that's a 100% germination rate - woohoo! As the roots are now developing, they've now been potted up into 0.5L pots using BioBizz Light-Mix and for the moment are being fed just room temperature water.
The plan is to leave them in the 0.5L pots for around a week to allow the roots to develop, then the three strongest young plants will be moved into a 15L AutoPot System and as we want to make this a fully organic grow, nutrients will be from the entire BioTabs range.
We're super excited to see how these watermelons perform in an AutoPot, so keep an eye on our blog for further updates, and for now we'll leave you with some photos of this early stage.[caption id="attachment_2628" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Roots developing in the Root Riot cubes[/caption] [caption id="attachment_2629" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Potting up in to 0.5L pots using BioBizz Light-Mix[/caption] [caption id="attachment_2630" align="aligncenter" width="600"] Potted up into 0.5L pots & BioTabs will be the feed of choice[/caption] [product sku="Root-Riot"] [product sku="Rootit-Heat-Mat"] [product sku="HydroT5"] [product sku="FMC3931"]
