What's on the grow in Burnley - Trinidad Scorpion 'Butch T'

I guess some of you were waiting to see the watermelon harvest from our Burnley store, unfortunately, with one thing and another, although they got a successful crop, those in charge of photographing it had a technical hiccup, so sadly no evidence of their success :(

So with that out of the way, it was time to get another grow on. This time they wanted to do some super hot chillies. Now the go to strain is usually the Carolina Reaper, but Burnley wanted to try something a little different and opted for the Trinidad Scorpion 'Butch T'. It was once considered the hottest chilli of its day with a Scoville Score of 1,463,700, until it was knocked off the top stop by, yup, you guessed it, the aforementioned Carolina Reaper, but it’ll still make you hang on for dear life after taking a bite!

Propagation – Week #2

After successful germination, we join this grow at week #2 where the lonesome seedling is sat in a rockwool cube under a Hydro22 T5 light. Burnley really wanted to try the Remo Nutrients range after getting some fantastic feedback about it from customers, so at this early stage, it’s being fed Grow, Micro & VeloKelp at just 1/2 the recommended dilution rate.

Propagation – Week #3

By week #3 the Butch T had more than doubled in size and although it’s still early days, she’s looking incredibly lush and healthy as the start of the vegetative growth phase fast approaches. No change on the feed as she’s still on Grow, Micro & VeloKelp at just 1/2 the recommended dilution rate.

Vegetative Growth – Week #1

Now established with roots hanging out of the rockwool (we put this down to using VeloKelp!) and a healthy foliage developing, it was time to transplant her. For this grow it was decided an IWS OxyPot Deep Water Culture (DWC) system will be used as we love the simplicity, yet the results they deliver can be amazing.

And of course the light has also been switched from the T5 to the Maxibright Daylight 315w CDM with the standard reflector, which will be used throughout vegetative growth and bloom phases until harvest.

Feed wise, it’s still on 1/2 the dilution rate but now with the addition of MagNifiCal to help get some essential macrominerals to the plant. This will improve the overall strength as well as increasing the absorption rate giving the plant the framework to produce bigger, more succulent chillies at harvest.

Vegetative Growth – Week #2

Wow! Even we’re amazed at the growth the Butch T has shown over the last 7 days! Foliage has exploded and more than doubled in size, and just look at how those roots are starting to develop. The only change is the feed has now been upped to 1.5ml per litre, which is the recommended dilution rate at this stage and all we can say is the plant is loving it.

Vegetative Growth – Week #3

Its now week #3 and the healthy growth continues. We’ve kept the feed the same using just Grow, Micro, VeloKelp and MagNifiCal at 1.5ml per litre, so just slightly under the recommended as we don’t feel it needs to be increased, just yet! The Maxibright Daylight is also doing its job giving the plant the exact lumens it needs, while the OxyPot is keeping the roots oxygenated and just look at how they’re coming on as its quite amazing how much they’ve grown in such a short space of time.

That’s all for now, stay tuned over the coming weeks so the Butch T starts to flower and we’ll leave you with a round up of photos...
