Growing Mediums

Having chosen a hydroponics system you will need to fill it with a suitable growing medium or soil substrate. The medium acts as an anchor for the roots and maintains a balance of moisture and air in the root zone. Soil-less mediums are inert, water retentive, supportive and sterile, provide good aeration and no don't contain weeds!

Perlite

Lightweight, porous, sterile, use 50/50 mix for perfection. Perlite is by far the cheapest of the growing media.

This is a great medium, it is cheap and lightweight and amazingly effective. Perlite is a naturally occurring volcanic rock that is treated in a furnace in a process known as exfoliation. Perlite is highly recommended because it has superb capillarity. Capillarity is the ability to lift moisture from reservoir and it is the key to the success with Perlite. Perlite does have a tendency to attract Algae which will appear as a green stain on the surface, this is nothing to worry about.

Clay Pebbles

Porous, lightweight, pH neutral and clean. Great for houseplants and many hydroponic uses. Can be re-used indefinitely and so are very economical.

These pebbles are manufactured specifically for plant culture. These are the perfect growing medium for house plants and almost anything in a small container. They are however less suitable for large plants in large pots. This is because they are less efficient in lifting nutrient form the lower reservoir than the other media.

Rockwool

A truly modern alternative to soil. Lightweight, completely sterile, non toxic, ideal air to water ratio (50:50 when damp), widely used with most active systems. Holland hydroponics supply Grodan rockwool and believe it to be the best on the market.
