This a system where the plants are actually in an inert medium,
usually clay pebbles. The nutrient is held in a tank underneath the
plants and is set to periodically pump up and Flood the roots with
nutrient. For a few minutes they are immersed then the nutrient
Drains back down to the tank. As the nutrient drains back it sucks
fresh, oxygen -rich air into the root zone. This is a great feature
of the system and it explains the super charged growth rates you
commonly see in flood & drain systems. |
Flood & Drain is a
great system for the home gardener because you can grow a wide
variety of plants at the same time and you can change individual
plants around in the system. You can harvest individual plants,
without disturbing the rest, and replace them at any time.
